Baek Jiyoung and COOL Yuri's online shopping mall surrounded in controversy
Baek Jiyoung and COOL Yuri's online store, "I Am Yuri," has caused much commotion after they were accused of leaving false reviews on their website.
The Fair Trade Commission revealed that the website violated the electronic commerce law that prohibits using false, exaggerated or deceptive means to attract customers. Five other online malls including Han Yejin's "Shopgirls," Kim Junhee's "Evajunie," Kim Yongpyo's "Lotoko," Jin Jaeyoung's "Aura J" and Hwang Hyeyoung's "Amai" were also caught for violating the same law, and were all fined between 4 and 10 million won.
"I Am Yuri" reportedly had employees post product reviews to make it seem like actual customers purchased their products and left the reviews. As a result, the FTC ordered the website to post a public apology on their website for 7 days in addition to removing all the false reviews, and fined the company 10 million won ($8,750 USD.)
However, Baek Jiyoung and Yuri's shopping mall have further created distrust since the original accusation. "I Am Yuri" and other shopping malls found guilty were ordered to write a notice of apology that was to stay on the main page for two weeks.
The additional act of dishonesty have netizens shaking their heads, and the media is criticizing them for deceiving their customers again and again. After this incident, demands for a broader crackdown on other online stores are increasing. Furthermore, netizens are now doubting current reviews on the site, commenting "Now I am suspicious of everything I want to buy," and "Even the legitimate positive reviews seem fake."
