Is SM Entertainment blocking JYJ from appearing on Korean TV?

Submitted: Jan 10 2011 06:40 PM by jennyjjong

JYJ has taken first place on many music charts, but none of the members have been broadcast on Korean shows lately. They haven't been able to come out on any of shows on the main three broadcasting companies' for over three months. The only shows they have been on in Korea are Yoochun's former drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal," the "KBS News Time," the "KBS Drama Awards," and "KBS Vivid Information."

C-Jes Entertainment said, "There are no calls for variety shows. Even if they are, in the end they end up being canceled, so we don't anticipate any of those. I've heard that the variety section was told not to feature any of the JYJ members. I feel like they're getting blocked intentionally."

Incidents include SBS' "Bae Kiwan, Choi Youngah, Cho Hyungki's Good Morning." JYJ was on the show and the air date was set for January 5th, but the date has been pushed back to a later date. MNet's "Lee Hyori's Off the Record" has also asked JYJ to be on the show, but later on canceled. TVN asked Yoochun to be a guest on their talk show, but was also cancelled. SBS and KBS had interviewed them on the JYJ-SM relationship, but did not air the segment. They were also set to perform at the Blue Dragon Awards, but again, was cancelled.

SBS explained that they did interview them, but there was nothing newsworthy about the story. MNet explained that JYJ had talked to an insider, but that the story was immediately rejected and that there was no plans to air it from the beginning. SM Entertainment denied all accusations and said, "We have no power inside the broadcasting companies. That is all up to the broadcasters."

The PDs of the broadcasters had explained that JYJ and SM are still having legal problems, and that they did not want to cast any problematic celebrities and cause anger amongst not only fans and viewers but also the companies. They explained that it was the same case with JYP and Jay Park. As even a mention of Jay Park by JYP caused endless controversies back and forth, the producers have a legitimate point.

Many agree that SM Entertainment is telling the truth when they claim to not be sabotaging JYJ's chances to be on air. They place the blame on the producers of the shows, who are afraid that SM may do something if JYJ is cast and would rather not take that risk.

However, the blame can't be put on the producers either. If SM Entertainment does act, then all three broadcasters would suffer immense consequences. On MBC's side, Girls' Generation's Seohyun and f(x)'s Victoria would be pulled from "We Got Married", Super Junior's Siwon would be pulled from "Icon", Super Junior's Heechul would leave "Radio Star" and SHINee's Onew and Minho would be pulled from "Show! Music Core". SBS would lose Super Juniors' Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and Shindong from "Strong Heart", not to mention multiple celebrities on "Star King" and KBS would see SHINee's Minho leave "100 Points," which is, from their point of view, not beneficial at all.

When you have a case where everyone is just looking out for their own interests, who do you place the final blame on?

This is such bull crap, the PD's are afraid SM will pull their artists? So SM would lose exposure for their artists, while JYJ would be allowed on shows. That would be a lose-lose decision. They'd have to be awful stupid to do that. If the PD's were afraid of backlash, I can't see how there were invitations to shows first that ended up canceled. Wouldn't they have not invited them in the first place?

Fear of SME backlash IS showing that SME is involved - if SME didn't show they'd retaliate then why would broadcaster fear it? Fear of negative feedback from viewers? The fact they're selling well and have been shown fan support negates this argument as well.

Oprah would so be all over this if it ever happened in the U.S... LOL! TBS... of course SME is behind it... the 3 members of JYJ have higher profiles than any other Korean idol/entertainer right now. I have no doubt SM is pulling an "AVEX" on the network shows.

ffs can't they all stop acting like three year olds? I'm not gonna boycot SM cuz all my favourite atrists are in SM and that would do damage to them too, but this is ridiculous.

i love all five of them, and boycotting SM means boycotting HoMin too... why can't we just support all five of them the way they are now, and continue to without letting old biddies like SM get to us??

Boycotting may hurt the others artists that aren't involved, but if this issue was in America they would have all stand up with JYJ. But because this is in South Korea that others kept silence. IF BOYCOTTING IS THE ONLY TO STOP SM THEN THIS IS WHAT I AM GOING TO DO. SM WON'T BACK OF EASILY- BESIDE JYJ WON'T BE THE LAST GROUP TO GO UNDER A SLAVERY CONTRACT. BOYCOTTING IS TO PREVENT OTHERS BAND GROUPS FROM THE SAME THING DBSK AND JYJ ARE GOING THROUGH. AND LIKE I STATED IN ANOTHER ARTICLE, "I AM ONLY A FAN OF DBSK AND JYJ, THOUGH I DO LIKE OTHERS ARTISTS. AS LONG AS YUNHO AND CHANGMIN ARE WITH SM I NO LONGER WILL SUPPORT THEM. GOOD LUCK TO THEM." IF BOYCOTTING IS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE MEDIA POWER CONTROL IN SOUTH KOREA OVER INDEPENDENT ARTISTS THEN THIS IS WHAT I AM GOING TO DO.

I have to agree with SnowqueenHer. I have tried, but there is a place where my conscience just can't ignore the manipulative, suppressive and underhanded tactics SME employs. No matter how anybody wants to justify it, HoMin is not TVXQ and I won't spend a dime on an imitation of them. If a car dealer slapped Rolls Royce emblems all over a Volkswagen, would you be fooled?... didn't think so.

Had SME put another name on HoMin besides TVXQ, I thought I might have been able make the journey with them but as I watch, on a daily basis, the PR and the announcement of HoMin guest appearances on shows that have ignored JYJ, I've grown more and more uncomfortable that money spent on SME "products" enables the continuation of blacklisting tactics I choose not be party to.

many are always saying that HoMin don't deserve the name DBSK but technically they do cause sm was the one that supported the name to be where it is today..... I mean yeah DBSK is all five of them but HoMin do have the right to use the name cause it's still part of sm...

Oh the other hand.... That what I have been wondering too.... I havent seen alot of JYJ on tv....I wanted to see their comeback on stage too..... :(

@loftywater101 Legally SM/HoMin have the right to use the name TVXQ... but using it doesn't mean its true. TVXQ was 5... the music they made was created by 5 voices. HoMin sounds nothing like TVXQ.

The power of SM Town... you can't deny that going against SM Entertainment isn't going to hurt.

Think of it through a producer's point of view and not a fan's point of view; which would you prefer: Super Junior, Girls' Generation, SHINee & f(x), or only JYJ?

This has got nothing to do with morals; it's purely business. It's not SM Town's fault that they're so popular as a whole.

@kcollubibed i don't find it a problem that HoMin is keeping the name of TVXQ. i don't get why they cannot keep the name they made famous as five. So they are just going to throw away the name on TVXQ? no.
i don't know why SM is doing this but i cannot stand this crap.
and is talking in caps really nessesary?
