1 in 3 South Korean teenagers face cyber bullying

In a recent report by Yonhap News, the media outlet reports that nearly 1 in 3 South Korean teenagers have experienced cyber bullying, through online games, text messages, e-mails and other web platforms. 

4,000 middle school and high school students were polled nationwide for the survey, in which 27.7% confessed to being cyber bullied at some point over the past three months. When quizzed further as to the form of cyber bullying, 12.1% revealed that the bullying was in the form of divulging personal information online.

10.2% revealed that the bullying occurred through online gaming, while 10.2% revealed that they were being bullied through popular chat app, KakaoTalk.

When further interviewed about the causes of bullying, 36% revealed that the bullying occurred because they “disliked or hated the victim”, with 20.5% revealing that they had absolutely no idea why they were being bullied. 8.2% revealed that they were being bullied because the bullies were “just having fun”.

More than half (52.2%) of those surveyed revealed that they would just simply watch while others were being cyber bullied, with less than 3% telling teachers and only 2.2% reporting it to the police.
