The controversy sprouted from a post on X (formerly Twitter) which claimed that Seohyun had shown “pure bitterness” toward Jihyo. The claim was based on a video clip featuring her and fellow Girls’ Generation member Hyoyeon. In the clip, Hyoyeon was dancing to her 2021 song “Second,” while Seohyun was pretending to thoroughly flip through the pages of a magazine in the back.

This seemingly harmless video became a source of controversy after fans noticed that Seohyun reacted as if she was repulsed after flipping a page of the magazine, and it happened to be a full-page ad featuring Jihyo.

Fans of both idols have been engaged in a heated back-and-forth since the post went viral, garnering over a million views. While some felt that Seohyun had “gotten away with” being disrespectful toward Jihyo, others countered that it was supposed to be a simple skit and that she was reacting to the product in the ad, not Jihyo.
