Famous Variety Show Assistant Director Jumps Off The Company Building

A fatal fall involving a male staff member in his 20s at the headquarters of TV Asahi, a major Japanese broadcaster, has recently come to light, causing a significant uproar.

The incident coincides with TV Asahi’s rise to the top of the industry last year by winning three consecutive ratings championships, leading the public to harshly criticize, questioning whether the success was built on the sacrifices of the production staff.

According to a Japanese media outlet, a man fell to his death on the evening of last month’s 10th at the TV Asahi building in Roppongi, Tokyo.

At the time, the area was crowded with tourists who came to see the Christmas light decorations, but the sudden fall turned the scene chaotic. The man collided with a passerby, injuring them, and died at the scene. The victim was later identified as an assistant director working on TV Asahi’s flagship variety show Matsuko & Ariyoshi’s Temporary Paradise, adding to the shock.

Police investigation concluded that there was no suspicion of foul play since the accident occurred in a location that was difficult for outsiders to access and could only be reached by climbing. According to insiders in the broadcasting industry, the deceased assistant director was employed by an external production company and had been working long hours to produce large year-end and New Year’s specials. Some have raised suspicions that overwork due to long working hours may have contributed to his extreme decision.

As controversy spread, TV Asahi issued a cautious statement saying, “Out of respect for the family’s grief, we are refraining from responding to specific details.” However, the atmosphere inside the broadcaster remains cold. News that a colleague lost his life on the floor with the employee cafeteria has left employees expressing deep trauma and sorrow.
