Mnet Announces That Twitter Voting Will No Longer Count For The 2022 MAMA Awards

This comes after rigged voting allegations.

Following the rigged voting accusations towards certain groups nominated for the 2022 MAMA Worldwide Fans’ Choice Award and Mnet’s subsequent statement that addressed the allegations, there has been another change in how votes will be cast for awards.

Most of the categories at the 2022 MAMA Awards have a scoring process that includes the opinions of industry professionals. Two categories, Worldwide Fans’ Choice and Worldwide Icon of The Year, are the only two completely dependent on fan voting. Previously, that included a mixture of voting and pre-voting on the Mnet Plus site, Spotify voting, music video voting, and Twitter votes.

In order to cast a Twitter vote fans would simply include a hashtag of the group’s name and #MAMAVOTE in a tweet in order for the tweet to count. Since the voting for these two categories began, millions of votes have been cast by fans in support of their favorite idols.

In a statement on their website on November 9 (KST), Mnet revealed that Twitter voting will no longer be included in the already completed pre-voting and regular voting for the fan-voted categories due to “internal changes within Twitter.

We would like to inform you that the judging criteria for the ‘Worldwide Icon of the Year’ and ‘Worldwide Fans’ Choice Category’ has been revised. Due to internal changes within Twitter, it has become impossible to secure and collect voting data made through Twitter for the PRE VOTE of ‘2022 MAMA AWARDS’.

Mnet then explains how the voting will change in a chart with no replacement for Twitter’s 10% of the voting. In addition, Twitter live voting during the ceremony will no longer be included in the Worldwide Icon of The Year Award scoring.

The statement ends with an apology to fans for being unable to include the voting that they have completed so far on Twitter.

We sincerely apologize for not being able to reflect the voices of global K-POP fans sent through the Twitter voting during the PRE VOTE stage. MAMA AWARDS will continue to make efforts to ensure a fair voting through objective data.

Pre-voting closed on November 4 (KST), and official voting for Worldwide Fans’ Choice’s Top Ten starts on November 10 (KST).
