Police Raid Coupang’s Korean Office Over Massive Scandal
The police have launched a forced investigation into e-commerce giant Coupang following the personal information leak of 33.7 million customers.
According to Yonhap News, on the morning of the 9th, the Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency deployed 17 personnel, including senior inspectors, to conduct a search and seizure at Coupang’s offices in Songpa District.
A police official stated, “The search and seizure is an essential measure to accurately grasp the facts of the case,” adding, “We plan to comprehensively investigate the overall facts of the case, including the perpetrators of the leak, the leak route, and the causes, based on the secured digital evidence.”
So far, the police have received server log records and other materials voluntarily submitted by Coupang to examine the circumstances of the data leak.
Nevertheless, the move to seize additional materials through a forced investigation suggests there may have been limitations in fully understanding the crime from the data provided by Coupang.
The police have currently secured the IP addresses used in the personal data breach and are pursuing the perpetrators, while also examining the technical vulnerabilities of Coupang’s internal customer information management system.
