Here’s How BLACKPINK’s Lisa Learned Dance In Korea As A Trainee Without Knowing The Language

It wasn’t easy.

Born in Thailand, BLACKPINK‘s Lisa moved to Korea at a young age to pursue her dream of becoming a K-Pop idol.

Knowing this, Billboard asked Lisa what it was like to be a trainee in a foreign country without knowing the language, adding that it must have been difficult.

I keep thinking about how when you started as a YG trainee, you didn’t speak any Korean and didn’t know anybody, which must have been hard.

They wondered if it was in dance classes where she became more comfortable with her surroundings. There was no need to talk to other people there, and dance was her specialty and comfort zone!

I wonder if dance class was where you could acclimate, in a way, because you didn’t have to play catch-up there?

Nodding her head, Lisa answered that it wasn’t easy to learn choreographies. In the start, she only understood the numbers her dance teacher would say to match the beat.

When I first learned dance in Korea, the only thing I knew [were the counts]: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Lisa had to make do with just that because her teacher didn’t tell her anything else. With pure skill and talent, she managed to learn the dances by simply watching and following along. She’s incredible!

And the teacher didn’t tell me more! I just danced and followed along.

Now look how far Lisa has come since then. Not only is she a much-loved member of one of the top girl groups in the world, she even recently made her solo debut with “LALISA,” a song named after her!

Lisa has a lot to be proud of.
