MONSTA X’s Kihyun Is The Main Vocalist In His Group, But That Didn’t Stop Him From Rapping In His Solo Debut

He can do it all.

MONSTA X‘s Kihyun just made his solo debut with VOYAGER, and fans are already obsessed with this new side of the singer. His single album is fully him.

While the title track, “VOYAGER,” leans on the side of pop rock, which Kihyun has expressed interest in before, the two B-sides show his diverse musical identity.

The third track, “Rain,” was chosen because of the challenge it posed for Kihyun. There was a rap part, and as MONSTA X’s main vocalist, this isn’t something he’s used to.

I noticed that there was a rap part and my first thought was, ‘How am I gonna do this?’. When I first tried it in the recording studio, it was very unusual.

The song is dark and brooding, and Kihyun’s low register rap section completes this track. While it initially seemed daunting, he was able to complete the part in under ten takes.

Making solo music allows him to try these types of things. Kihyun says of the difference between performing as MONSTA X and being solo, “there are rules, there are members to care for, but doing my solo music, there are no rules and no guidelines to follow.”
