Why BTS’s Suga Might Not Release More Music As Agust D After “D-DAY”

Could this really be the end of Agust D?

It came as a shock when BTS‘s Suga suddenly announced a new solo album and that it would be the conclusion of his Agust D trilogy.

Hello,

This is BIGHIT MUSIC.

BTS member SUGA is releasing his first official solo album, ‘D-DAY.’

‘D-DAY’ marks the concluding chapter of a trilogy by SUGA’s another moniker, Agust D, succeeding the previous mixtapes, ‘Agust D’ and ‘D-2.’ The album delves into the personal journey of SUGA as Agust D, offering an intimate portrayal of his life as an artist.

We ask for fans’ love and support for the last chapter of his trilogy.

Starting with the pre-release track set to drop on April 7, SUGA will be engaging with fans through a variety of content, including a documentary and a world tour. As SUGA embarks on his first official solo activities, we kindly request for your support.

For years, Suga released solo music under his alter-ego Agust D. Yet, that will likely soon end.

On April 10 (KST), Suga appeared as a guest on soloist IU‘s YouTube talk show, IU’s Palette. Though the two artists have collaborated on two songs in the last three years, this was the first time they interacted on camera, displaying their true friendship.

During the interview, IU brought up alter-egos. She asked, “Does anything change depending on your stage name?” Suga explained how as a BTS member and producer, he uses “SUGA.”

When I go by as… It’s external work… like commercial songs, I usually go by SUGA.

— Suga

Concerning Agust D, he compared it to famous examples in the rap community. His reason for creating Agust D came from a place of anger and frustration, though.

And about Agust D, there are so many examples… Eminem’s Slim Shady, Nicki Minaj’s The Harajuku Barbie. The reason behind creating Agust D… At first, I was so fed up back then. ‘Why would people look down on me? Because I’m an idol?’

— Suga

Suga explained that K-Pop idols are expected to keep quiet and not say certain things. So, as Agust D, he was able to speak his mind when he was upset.

When normally as an idol, there are a lot of things I can’t say out loud. I needed a means to let my feelings out, I created another self called Agust D.

— Suga

While preparing his new album, Suga realized that Agust D’s chapter might be coming to a close. Having so many versions of himself can be difficult.

While preparing for this solo album, it just suddenly go me! Articles will read, ‘SUGA releases another album,’ but I realized trying to explain and synchronize myself with it would be difficult…

— Suga

So, IU asked, “Then someday ‘SUGA’ could be another ego releasing another album?” Suga revealed that we might not see much more of Agust D after D-DAY.

That was very sharp of you. Once Agust D’s trilogy comes to an end, it might be hard to see him again… That’s what I’m thinking for now.

— Suga

The reason behind Suga’s decision is heartwarming, though. He explained that as Agust D was born from anger, he no longer feels so many emotions of rage. In fact, Suga has forgiven his “haters” now.

As I get older, the less and less I get angry. They referred to us as ‘BTS is back from hell.’ We were beaten up by so many haters, but I’ve forgiven all those people now. Anger was what mainly created my music. They say I’ve become mellow.

— Suga

So, IU wondered if this would impact the style of music Suga will make and release now. We can see a shift in style as early as D-DAY, actually.

IU: Does that mean your music could change from now on?

Suga: Sure.

IU: Can we expect some easy listening songs?

Suga: In fact, in my new album, expect for the first 3-4 tracks. All the tracks are easy listening. Actually, I write easy songs better. The tracks, in the beginning, are there to clarify the theme of this album. The mood and styles of the songs behind are closer to the kind of music I’ve been writing since I was young.

Suga also recently cleared up pronunciation for Agust D. Read more below.
