K-Pop Fans Sadly Discuss The Seemingly Bleak Future Of Weki Meki

Will we ever get new music from them?

When Weki Meki first debuted in August 2017, they had a lot of promise: Among their member line-up were former I.O.I members Doyeon and Yoojung, which automatically meant more interest in the group compared to those with all unknown members. Their first album, Weme, sold around 50k units, which at the time was pretty good for a new K-Pop girl group from a non-“Big Three” label. Their label, Fantagio, had debuted ASTRO just the year before, and their first year together had already proven them to be a talented K-Pop group with a supportive fandom.

However, Weki Meki’s popularity didn’t skyrocket like some people expected. In fact, with each album produced after their debut, the group’s sales continued to decrease despite releasing solid bops. And for the first several years of their career, they were quite active, releasing one album in 2017, two in 2018, two in 2019, and two in 2020.

2021, though, seems to be where things started slowing down for Weki Meki. They only released one album, I Am Me., in November of that year, and as of now, that was their last comeback. It’s been 17 months, then, since their last album came out, and though they upload content pretty regularly on their YouTube and Twitter accounts, there aren’t any solid signs of a comeback. Fans had some hope that new music would be released after the group finally revealed their official lightstick in August 2022, but nothing has been announced.

Since they debuted in August 2017, the members’ contracts are presumably set to expire in August 2024. With this date quickly approaching and no clear signs as to what’s next for Weki Meki, fans are worried about the future of the group. Recently, a Reddit thread was created to discuss just that.

Realistically, what do we think is going to happen to Weki Meki?

The most popular belief, sadly, is that Weki Meki will end up disbanding quietly next year once their contracts are up, with some fans hoping they’ll at least have one last goodbye single before then.

A couple people mentioned how they had their hope restored a little by the release of the lightstick, which made the lack of new music even more disappointing. Others didn’t trust the lightstick release in the first place.

Overall, fans of Weki Meki are just sad about how such a promising group has become so inactive, especially since they did release great music!

We hope that whatever does happen with Weki Meki, that the members of the K-Pop group are all able to pursue careers in whatever field they’re passionate about!
