Son Heung Min Ex-Girlfriend’s Treatment By Police Sparks Huge Backlash After “Fake Pregnancy” Scandal
Two individuals accused of blackmailing South Korean football star Son Heung Min have appeared at court for a warrant hearing.
The woman, believed to be Son’s former girlfriend, and her current boyfriend are under investigation for allegedly attempting to extort large sums of money by claiming she was pregnant with the player’s child.

According to reports, the woman in her 20s, surnamed Yang, told Son in June last year that she was expecting his baby. She is accused of using this claim to pressure the footballer into handing over more than ₩300 million KRW (about $214,000 USD). She reportedly sent Son an ultrasound image and even signed a written agreement promising to keep the pregnancy private.

The man involved, surnamed Yoon and in his 40s, is said to have been in a relationship with Yang at the time. He allegedly learned of the situation through her and attempted to blackmail Son’s side again this past March, demanding additional money.

Both suspects arrived at the Seoul Central District Court wearing masks and avoiding eye contact with reporters. Yang remained silent when asked whether she still claimed to be pregnant. She shook her head when asked if she admitted to the charges and denied planning the blackmail together with Yoon. Meanwhile, Yoon repeatedly apologized to the press as he was led away.

What has sparked backlash, however, is the way the police treated the young woman. Based on photos and clips from her appearance, Yang can be seen in handcuffs and escorted by officers on either side, standing before the press in a highly publicised moment.

The scene has drawn attention not just because of the accusations she faces but also because of how harsh the treatment appears. Comments full of criticism soon lit up online forums as the photos went viral.

- “This is seriously f***ing hilarious, even making her stand at the press line.”
- “What a messed-up country lol.”
- “What exactly did the ex-girlfriend even do wrong… wasn’t it the boyfriend she met afterward who did the blackmailing?”
- “Are you kidding me? Seriously, men in this country are just hopeless.”
- “How are we supposed to date men in a country like this? At this point, extinction sounds like the only answer.”
While the investigation into whether the ultrasound image sent to Son was fabricated continues, the court has yet to make a final decision on whether to detain Yang and Yoon.
