Sophia is known for her family’s wealth and lineage. Her famous parents are well-known: Her mother is the stage actress and singer Carla Guevara-Laforteza, while her father Basilio Godfrey Laforteza III is a former dancer and an executive chef in Manila. Yet, it is her grandfather, Domingo M. Guevara, who many know because he openly opposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos‘s declaration of martial law.

The Philippines is currently in the midst of a political protest. People are taking to the streets to fight back against corruption. It was alleged that taxpayers lost billions of dollars because the government put the money into what outlets have described as “bogus” flood relief projects.

Amid the protests, Sophia sparked attention for her Instagram post that shared support for those protesting, adding, “The voice of the Filipino people is powerful and unshakable. Even if I cannot be present in today’s rallies, I am listening, I am aware, and I stand with you.”

While idols tend to stay out of politics, netizens praised Sophia for her post, and that despite being “privileged,” she continues to support and advocate social issues like she did before debuting.
