Besides talent, an idol’s visuals are an aspect that many companies place a focus on.
When an idol’s appearance falls outside the ideal, they are often subjected to criticism, regardless of their age.
One idol’s experience of dealing with these harsh standards resulted in her making big changes.
In 2017, Sakaki Miyu made her debut as a member of STU48, a sister group to AKB48.

Unfortunately, during her time as an idol, she was subjected to criticism of her appearance, including her weight. On one occasion according to fans, she even went live while crying after her mother insulted her appearance at an event, and cut her hair on the spot.
Sakaki Miyu from STU48 broke down crying on Youtube after her mom told her she looked terrible during the LINELIVE event. She didn't like her long bangs and told her to cut them, so she did so while crying on video. Poor girl can't catch a break, since mngmt told her she was fat. pic.twitter.com/O5evHAvuXh

She is no longer a member of STU48 following her graduation, but is still active online as an influencer. She recently shared a post detailing her physical transformation, which, in her own words, did not just include plastic surgery, though she has admitted to spending at least 6 million yen (around 38 thousand USD) on self improvement and plastic surgery, which she is open about.

Her surgery list includes rhinoplasty, removal of eye bags, chin lift, and partial liposuction. She has also stabilized her weight and stopped binge eating and has a more balanced diet.

She seems much happier with what she has done to make her transformation, and even offers non-surgery tips to help others who want to make a change.
