With the growing concern around K-Pop idols’ body image issues and extreme diets, a concerning moment of a HYBE idol refusing food while on camera has sparked renewed discussions about the toxicity of the prevailing beauty standards of the industry.
The idol in question is LE SSERAFIM’s Eunchae, and the incident in question was caught in a behind-the-scenes video documenting the filming process and promotions of the group’s latest music video, “Celebrations.”
During one of their music show recordings, Yunjin was seen offering Eunchae some jelly candies, saying, “You’re not going to eat this either?” As Eunchae turns down her offer, Kazuha coaxes her from the side, reasoning, “You need to eat to have energy.”
Yunjin pushes her again, bargaining with her to at least eat one. Eunchae eventually gives up and picks one from the packet.
This particular interaction has racked up thousands of views on X (formerly Twitter), where many fans expressed alarm at Eunchae’s behavior. Some felt that Yunjin and Kazuha’s insistence on Eunchae eating the candy implied that she had probably not eaten enough to make it through their grueling schedules, while her refusing to eat even one candy reflected Eunchae’s supposed extreme dieting tendencies nowadays. However, fans were also grateful that she was surrounded by supportive and caring members to protect her.
