MONSTA X’s I.M Opens Up On Why He’s Not Competitive When It Comes To Making Music

He makes a lot of good points.

MONSTA X‘s I.M recently participated in an inspiring interview with Arena Homme Plus where he discussed several aspects of himself as an artist. One important point I.M made was how he doesn’t like to treat making music into something like a competition and the reason is quite beautiful.

I.M recently made his solo debut with his hit album “DUALITY” and, of course, it was a great success! Even though it hasn’t been that long since his solo debut, fans are always craving more! With that said, I.M was questioned on the type of music he’d like to make next.

Q: What kind of music do you want to make as an artist, I.M?

I thought about this a lot. But I decided that having a set kind of music I want to make will only tie me down to that type of music. So I’m going to make whatever I feel like making. I’m going to like whatever I come to like, and get inspiration from the things I feel… I just want to be honest with myself. I don’t (limit myself) to be like, ‘I want to be the best rapper in the world.’

Following I.M’s response, the interviewer asked if he is not the competitive type. While many artists have claimed they desire to best at what they do, I.M makes a great point about how setting specific goals for oneself can create unhealthy pressure.

Q: Are you usually not the competitive or overachieving type?

Only when I’m playing a soccer game (laughs). When it comes to music, I don’t want to pressure myself. I think it’s great to plan for the future and prepare for the next steps. But setting a goal, like ‘My final destination is over there’ or ‘I have to reach that point,’ seems neither cool nor meaningful to me.

I.M then conveyed that he’s definitely the “Go with the flow” type of person as he claimed he believes in “Individual moments.

Q: What a great answer! Art is not a sport, nor is it a competition. What do you believe in, then?

Hmm. This question makes me think. What do I believe in? I believe in the individual moments, their ‘climates.’ The vibe of the room at those moments. All the emotions that I pick up, not from words but from what I’m looking at.

I.M’s viewpoints on music and competitiveness must be a great method as his solo debut as well as Monsta X are both amazing and successful!
