Angry Girl Group Member Announces Sudden Departure, Intention To Sue Agency

An idol’s eight-year relationship with her agency has soured, leading to her departure and an upcoming legal battle.

Wang Yi is a member of the Chinese girl group SNH48, the second international sister group of Japan’s AKB48. She joined the SNH48 as a member of its Team HII unit in 2017. On May 5, Wang went public with her decision to leave her management agency, SIBA.
Since 2021, Wang said she has been experiencing immense pressure, due to her work, health, and personal life (including the death of a family member). Even so, she pressed on, and by mid-2024 her condition had deteriorated. Performing, which once brought her joy, now began to make her feel sick.
The side effects of medication made my hands tremble constantly. More than once, I experienced hyperventilation backstage, leading to full-body numbness. Tinnitus and social anxiety followed me everywhere like shadows. Standing on the stage I once loved most, all that remained was a physical urge to vomit.

Throughout her struggles, Wang tried to stay positive and hide her frustration from fans, but she has now reached a breaking point.
That day, I finally understood: If I kept living in this kind of environment, the version of me who is vibrant only because of your love would eventually be worn down and destroyed by it all. And I don’t want to accept that ending.

Wang called out her “heartless” agency for mistreatment and neglect, pointing out her achievements that went unrewarded, such as ranking second during a song competition.
I ranked second — again and again — and still they ignored me. The reward for trying to be better was endless touring and cold shoulders.

She is terminating her contract and intends to take legal action against SIBA.
