K-Pop has a long legacy! With the K-Pop on the current tidal wave it is on, here are some facts that will truly have you shook!

 

1) When TVXQ Debuted, IZ*ONE’s Jang Wonyoung Wasn’t Even Born Yet!

One of K-Pop’s oldest and most well-known bands, TVXQ made their debut on December 26, 2003 as a five-member group under SM Entertainment. In 2019, the band celebrated their 16th year anniversary!

 

An interesting fact to know is that when TVXQ debuted, IZ*ONE‘s maknae Jang Wonyoung, born August 31, 2004, hadn’t even been born yet! The two groups are currently active now, at the same time as each other!

 

2) Girls Generation Is The Only Girl Group To Win A Golden Disc Daesang In 34 Years

Girls Generation are industry legends, and have been for 12 years! As part of their long legacy, the group is also the only girl group to have ever won a Golden Disc Daesang at the Golden Disc Awards against boy groups!

 

They picked up their Golden Disc Daesang at the 25th Golden Disc Awards in 2010 with their top-charting album, Oh!

 

3) Girls Day Yura’s Legs Are Covered By Insurance

A most surprising fact about Girls Day‘s Yura is that she has her legs covered by insurance! On a 2015 episode of KBS 2TV‘s Escape Crisis Number 1, Yura revealed that she has insured her gorgeous legs for a staggering 500,000,000 won (approx. 448,000 USD), at the behest of her CEO who thought it would be a good idea for her to do so.

 

4) PENTAGON’s Jinho Is The Same Age As Sunmi And EXO’s Baekhyun, But Debuted 9 Years After Sunmi And 4 years After Baekhyun

As fans of Jinho probably know, he was initially an SM Entertainment trainee, and even made his debut in the project group SM The Ballad alongside Super Junior‘s Kyuhyun, SHINee‘s Jonghyun and TRAxX‘s Jay. He ended up leaving the label, however, and started over at CUBE Entertainment, eventually making his debut with PENTAGON in 2016.

 

Jinho was born on April 17, 1992, making him a few months older than his same-age peers, former Wonder Girls‘ member Sunmi and EXO‘s Baekhyun (born May 2 and 6, 1992, respectively). Despite being older, however, Jinho made his debut 9 years after Sunmi, and 4 years after Baekhyun did!

 

5) IZ*ONE’s Kang Hyewon Once Celebrated Her Birthday For More Than 36 Hours

IZ*ONE was part of the 2019 line-up for KCON in New York and Los Angeles, which was held on July 6-7 and August 15-16, respectively. Kang Hyewon was born on July 5, 1999, and celebrated her birthday in Korea before departing for the US with her group!

Due to the timezones, Hyewon ended up celebrating her birthday for a solid 36 hours in 2019!

 

6) In 2017, IOI’s Nayoung Presented The Rookie Of The Year Award To Pristin’s Nayoung

In 2016, IOI won the Rookie Of The Year award at the 2016 MAMA.

 

Keeping with tradition, the recipients of the award would present the next year’s award to the new winners of the award. As leader of both IOI and Pristin (which debuted in 2017), Nayoung presented the award as IOI’s Nayoung, and when the rest of Pristin joined her on the stage after being announced the winners, she accepted the award as Pristin’s Nayoung!

7) TWICE’s Dahyun Has Absolute/Perfect Pitch, A Rare Ability For Any Human To Have

TWICE‘s Dahyun is so incredibly talented, but surely no one thought she’d be this perfect! Dahyun has revealed on camera that she has absolute/perfect pitch, which is the extremely rare ability to be able to identify or recreate a given musical note without a previous reference. Around 1/50000 have this ability, and Dahyun is one of them!

8) GDRAGON Had A Total Training Period Of 13 years

BIGBANG;s G-Dragon is a king of the industry, but he’s been around waay longer than you think!

Initially starting his career at the age of 6 with the group Little Roo’Ra, when his group disbanded, he joined SM Entertainment at age 8. He trained for a period of 5 years until he was 13, specializing in dance, until he left the label to join another one.

 

At age 13, after being recommended to YG Entertainment by Sean of the group Jinusean (which was under YG) G-Dragon began training at YG Entertainment next, and trained for the next 5 years, until his debut with BIGBANG at age 18.

 

Putting his previous career+training period together, G-Dragon has had a total training period of 13 years, and has invested an overwhelming part of his life into his career! Fans are so glad he stayed, because K-Pop wouldn’t be the same without him!
