A former national rugby player turned television personality has been sentenced to prison once again, following an appeal, for attempting to sexually assault and physically assault his ex-girlfriend.

The case dates back to June of last year, when the man (Mr. A) visited the home of his then-girlfriend (Ms. B) in the Gangnam district of Seoul. During the visit, he attempted to force himself on her, and when she resisted, the situation escalated into violence.

According to reports, Mr. A punched and hit Ms. B with his hands and strangled her. When she locked herself in the bathroom to escape, he allegedly broke the door down and continued the assault. He also reportedly damaged her mobile phone during the assault. The severity of the violence left the victim with serious emotional distress, and she later petitioned the court for a harsh sentence.

Mr. A was initially found guilty of attempted rape and assault causing injury and was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. He was also ordered to complete a sexual violence treatment program. He appealed the ruling, but the court upheld the original sentence.

On May 21, the Seoul High Court reaffirmed the initial decision. The judge stated that although the attempted rape did not result in completion and that the victim slapped the former athlete first, it did not excuse the actions that followed. The court also noted that Mr. A had deposited ₩50.0 million KRW (about $35,900 USD) as restitution.

Given that Mr. A, a former rugby player, assaulted the victim indiscriminately, it is likely she suffered significant psychological trauma. The defendant worsened the situation by making excuses rather than showing remorse, and the victim has petitioned the court for a severe punishment.
