Hsu (also known by her stage name Big S) was a Taiwanese actress, singer, and television host best known for her lead role in the 2001-2002 series Meteor Garden. A week after her death, Hsu’s younger sister, Dee Hsu, announced that the family had decided to bury Hsu’s ashes under a tree in a registered cemetery. The burial process is reportedly eco-friendly, involving a biodegradable container and no gravestone.

Some fans took issue with the announcement, citing concerns that tree burials aren’t as environmentally friendly as many believe them to be. Hsu’s husband, singer and DJ Koo Jun Yup, also opposed the tree burial, wanting to bury Hsu at a site where he could visit her at any time.
