BTS’s “Responsibility” Regarding ICE Deportation Raids Ignites Viral And Heated Debate

This comes after calls to boycott in support of Palestine.

The Trump administration recently implemented a sweeping deportation initiative with a goal of 3,000 daily arrests, focusing heavily on major Democratic-led cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

These raids are conducted by ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and have made headlines for being aggressive and operating on questionable guidelines.

With ICE raids potentially arresting US citizens, it is unsurprising that K-Pop fans have expressed concerns for their touring favorite artists.

However, a recent argument involving BTS has triggered a debate on activism and responsibility.

A post on TikTok mentioning BTS’s alleged inclusion on pro-Palestine boycott lists also included a detail about the group recording their album in Los Angeles, one of the cities that ICE has focused on. The video seems to imply that BTS should be “doing” something about these raids.

Many that support the idea that BTS should speak up about ICE Raids have stated that the group coming and taking part in the city’s culture without also mentioning the struggles does not sit well with them. Rather than placing blame or responsibility, many seem to want the group to at least acknowledge what is happening in some manner.

On the other hand, many feel that criticism of BTS, a non-American group, due to them not speaking out about ICE Raids is completely incorrect. Along with questioning what the group is expected to do, many have highlighted possible barriers the group could face and called out criticism as “performative activism.”

With their massive influence, it is not a surprise that many wish for BTS to speak out about certain issues, even in circumstances where it is debated.
