BTS And “Squid Game” Win Big At “2021 People’s Choice Awards”

It was an amazing night for Asian-led entertainment!

It was a great night for AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) entertainment at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards.

Not only did Marvel Studios‘ first Asian-led superhero film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings beat out multiple other blockbusters, including fellow MCU film Black Widow for “The Action Movie of 2021…”

Its star Simu Liu won the award for “The Action Movie Star of 2021!” He beat fellow Marvel stars Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pratt, and Florence Pugh, as well as Vin Diesel, Daniel Craig, John Cena, and Charlize Theron.

Also, Mindy Kaling‘s Netflix series Never Have I Ever won “The Comedy Show of 2021” (as it should).

Filipina American songstress Olivia Rodrigo took home multiple awards…

The annual pop-culture awards show aired on NBC and E!, broadcasted from Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, California, as comedian Kenan Thompson hosted. Since it’s a fan-voted awards show, spanning 40 categories across multiple forms of entertainment, such as music, TV, film, and more, the peoples’ voices are heard. And the people are looking for more diversity on screen.

This also means not all the content we consume is from the United States. In fact, four of the 2021 People’s Choice Awards biggest awards went to South Korea.

As expected, Marvel continually swept in categories as Disney+ series Loki won “The Show of 2021” and lead Tom Hiddleston won “The Male TV Star of 2021.”

Yet, Loki was beaten by Netflix’s Korean thriller series Squid Game for “The Bingeworthy Show of 2021.” It was up against Ted Lasso, The White Lotus, Sex/Life, Outer Banks, Mare of Easttown, and Cobra Kai.

It was a legendary evening, especially for BTS, as they took home not one but three awards. The first is for “The Group of 2021.” They beat out their besties Coldplay, Dan + Shay, Imagine Dragons, the Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5, Migos, and Twenty One Pilots.

The everso iconic “Butter” MV earned them the award for “The Music Video of 2021.” It was up against Adele‘s “Easy on Me,” Olivia Rodrigo “Good 4 U,” Karol G, Anuel AA, and J Balvin‘s “Location,” Lil Nas X‘s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” Justin Bieber, Daniel Caesar, and Giveon‘s “Peaches,” and Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI‘s “Stay.” Not only that, but BTS even beat themselves! Their collaboration with Coldplay “My Universe” was also nominated in this category!

Finally, “Butter” is more than just “song of the summer,” it’s the song of the whole year! Winning all of their nominations, BTS also received “The Song of 2021” for their hit song “Butter,” beating Ed Sheeran‘s “Bad Habits, Adele’s “Easy on Me,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U,” Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” Justin Bieber, Daniel Caesar, and Giveon’s “Peaches,” Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI’s “Stay,” and Cardi B‘s “Up.”

BTS took to Twitter to thank their fanbase ARMY following their three wins.

What a great night!
