The Era BTS Channeled For Their “My Universe” Music Video Shooting

They channeled their inner actors.

BTS recently released the behind-the-scenes video for their filming of “My Universe,” a collaboration song between BTS and Coldplay.

Unlike BTS’s typical music video shooting, the members shot their scenes in front of a green screen, with only each other and their outfits to help them get in character.

Everything here will have CGI. And we’re in these outfits like a group of rebels.

In order to help all the members tell the story, Jimin explains to Jungkook the purpose behind the music video.

Jimin: Do you know what the MV concept is?

Jungkook: Space.

Jimin: What? We each have planets. So we have our planet and there are aliens out there too. But this is a world where music is forbidden.

Jungkook: And we go against that?

Jimin: We still sing out “My Universe” from each of our planets. We go against the oppression and sing our song.

Jungkook: We fight for our music. That’s BTS.

Jimin: Yeah, BTS! I was saying that earlier.

And, certainly, BTS have often portrayed themes of fighting for your dreams in the past.

In fact, to help all the members further be on the same page for their acting, RM and V smartly suggest that they channel an attitude from one of their earliest music videos, “N.O.”

“N.O,” “N.O.”

A 2018 article about the social commentary of BTS’s lyrics from Billboard explains that “N.O,” along with their debut track “No More Dream,” represents a rebellion against South Korea’s extreme focus on education.

“N.O,” featured similar messaging [to No More Dream], using double entendres (“Hands up to the Sky”) as the group addressed the harships they and their peers have faced: “Who made us study machines?” raps Suga. “Who will take responsibility [for us] living the lives of puppets?” RM asks as a response to his earlier question of “Will this really make our parents happy?” The entire song similarly questions the lifestyle of South Korean students and, like “No More Deram,” expresses a desire to see change.

And the music video for “N.O” further expresses this rebellion as the music video shows BTS in a dystopian-style classroom, where they literally overturn the desks and try to fight for their own passions.

And while BTS is filming “My Universe,” they channel their attitude from their early music.

We’re rebels. Guys, bring out your “N.O” eyes. Like our second album.

And, of course, BTS did an incredible job conveying the story, with the music video looking impressive despite the challenging filming.
