“Crazy Rich Asians” Becomes Most Successful Romantic Comedy Film In 9 Years

The film has earned fame and millions fit for a crazy rich asian!

The film “Crazy Rich Asians”, directed by Jon M. Chu, has become the most successful romantic comedy film in the North American box office since Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds‘ The Proposal in 2009.

Following the Labor Day weekend, the Warner Bros. film has earned a total of $117 million. It won the domestic weekend box office for three consecutive weeks.

The groundbreaking film earned a whopping $30 million during the Labor Day weekend alone, becoming the first to reach $30 million during a Labor Day weekend in 11 years.

The last film that hit $30 million was Halloween back in 2007 over the four-day Labor Day holiday weekend.

The film follows the love story of Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding), as they figure out their future together amidst family drama and crazy rich asians. It’s the first film to star an all Asian-American cast since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club.

Director Jon M. Chu has previously referred to the film as “not just a movie, but a movement” and Vanity Fair has called it a “watershed moment for Asian representation in Hollywood“.

Congratulations to the whole cast, staff, and crew that made this amazing history possible in Hollywood!
