Who Is She? The Daughter Of A Controversial Former Politician Who Received A Silver Button 11 Days After Opening A YouTube Channel
Shortly after her debut as a YouTuber, the daughter of a controversial former politician received a YouTube silver play button—one of the YouTube Creator Awards given when a channel surpasses 100,000 subscribers.
Cho Min is the daughter of the former Minister of Justice in Korea, Cho Kuk. Cho Kuk served as the Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Affairs from 2017 to 2019 before the president appointed him as the Minister of Justice—which he served for only one month before resigning.
Born in 1991 to a wealthy family in Busan, the daughter Cho Min displayed impressive academic achievements by publishing an article Nos Gene Polymorphisms in Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy, in a medical research journal—she was even listed as the first author even though she was only in high school.
Her achievements were scrutinized in 2019 due to her father’s involvement in a scandal involving corrupt business activities. The prosecutor’s office raided multiple locations to gather evidence of her “suspicious” participation in the medical article; the article was later retracted due to violations of ethical guidelines.
Cho Min used the retracted article to gain admission to Korea University and Busan University medical school, and she was under suspicion of receiving scholarships meant for financially challenged students. Her mother, Chung Kyung Sim, was arrested for forging official documents; Cho Min was supposedly given an academic award from Dongyang University—where her mother teaches—but the president of the university denied ever giving her the award. In addition, it was reported that Cho Min flunked two semesters in medical school because of poor academic performance.
With all that happened with the Cho family, members of their family were placed under a travel ban.
Having gone through many controversies, Cho Min received hate comments from the Korean public—however, she received a lot of support, too. On May 23, Cho Min opened her YouTube channel named minchobae. In 11 days, she surpassed 100,000 subscribers.
Despite having only a 39-second teaser video and no other content uploaded yet, there has been a lot of interest from people. Cho Min expressed her plans for the channel’s future in the teaser video.
