Gong Hyo Jin under fire for role in drama “Jealousy Incarnate”

SBS has issued a statement after Gong Hyo Jin and the production of Jealousy Incarnate (Don’t Dare to Dream) were criticised for misrepresenting weather forecasters in the drama.

Jealousy Incarnate made its debut episode on August 24th with a number of positive reactions for its refreshing take. However, actress Gong Hyo Jin and the rest of the production team eventually received criticisms for allegedly misrepresenting female weather forecasters.

In its first episode, it was allegedly portrayed that female weather forecasters were lesser professions than news anchors. Another instance was Gong Hyo Jin’ use of butt pads during the episode, while her male news anchor encourages her show more curves that viewers found oppressive.

Meanwhile, in response to the complaints, SBS issued a statement saying, “We had no intention in degrading the profession of weather forecasters.” It was explained that the character was only portrayed to create a dramatic effect for the drama and hoped that viewers won’t judge the rest of the drama based on one episode. The agency closed the statement with an apology if the episode appeared to be derogatory for weather forecasters.

Gong Hyo Jin plays the role Na Ri, a weather broadcaster, that dreams to be a news anchor at a broadcasting station. The drama will continue its run until November 10th on SBS and also stars Jo Jung Suk and Ko Gyung Pyo.
