According to the South China Morning Post, the “two women were said to have developed a relationship after meeting in a pub two months ago. The 26-year-old worked as a waitress in a restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui, while her partner was a hair stylist at a salon in the same area.” The suspect, a 39-year-old jobless man, has been charged with two counts of murder and is due in court on Monday.

A man was arrested after a knife attack that left two women dead in Hong Kong.

On June 2, around 5 pm (HKT), police say a man approached two women, aged 22 and 26, from behind at the Plaza Hollywood Mall in the Diamond Hill area of Hong Kong. He then suddenly stabbed one of the women in the back, who collapsed as the assailant continued stabbing her.

The second woman attempted to help her friend away from the man, shoving him away and trying to drag her to safety. After intimidating the second woman with his knife, he continued attacking the first.

After the second woman attempted to help the first again, kicking him at one point, CCTV footage shows the attacker running after her as the first victim lies motionless on the ground. The two women were taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead an hour after the attack began.

Police arrested the man on the scene after subduing him.

Eileen Chung, a senior superintendent from the police’s Kowloon East regional headquarters, says the man did not know either woman. The man reportedly has a history of mental illness and requires regular health check-ups.

According to police, he entered the mall moments before the attack, purchased the knife there, and wandered around until the assault.
