International K-Pop fans have long wished they could influence how their favorite acts perform on the Korean charts, but it hasn’t been easy. Now, thanks to a new update, you can finally make a Melon account no matter where you are in the world! Here’s how.

Up until now, creating a Melon account required a verified Korean phone number. As such, the only way fans have been able to join the platform is to rent an account from a Korean seller, which is often pricey and runs the risk of the account getting banned altogether. Now, that’s finally changed. Thanks to a new update, you can create a Melon account by logging in via KakaoTalk, a popular messaging platform that allows global sign-ups.

Note that accounts created without a Korean phone number will be marked as “Unverified,” which means you won’t be able to stream songs via Melon. However, you will be able to contribute to your favorite artists’ success by following them, liking their songs, and leaving star ratings.

Here’s a simple rundown of how to create your account:

Step 1: Create a KakaoTalk account

If you don’t already have a KakaoTalk account, you’ll need to make one in order to log into Melon. Thankfully, the KakaoTalk app is available on Android and iOS in most regions globally, so signing up is a simple process.

Once you’ve downloaded KakaoTalk Messenger from the App Store or Google Play, you can sign up using your phone number. Unlike Melon, KakaoTalk accepts phone numbers from any country.

After your phone number has been verified, complete the account creation process by adding a password and filling out your personal details (including name email address).

Step 2: Access Melon

Now, it’s time to make your Melon account. The Melon app is available on both iOS and Android. However, you may need to temporarily switch your device to the Korean app store in order to download the app.

If you don’t want to change your app store location, you can also access Melon on a PC via the platform’s official website: melon.com.

Step 3: Choose the log-in method

Once you have Melon downloaded, open the app and head to the menu by tapping on the three-barred icon in the upper right-hand corner.

From the menu screen, tap on the default profile picture icon marked “Please log in” in Korean.

Clicking this icon should bring up the option to log in with KakaoTalk—the bright yellow button.

You may then be presented with a second screen showing two buttons. If so, choose the top one: “Easy KakaoTalk log-in.”

If you’re logging in through the website on a PC, you’ll find the log-in option on the right hand of the screen under the navigation bar.

From there, click the yellow button marked “Log in with Kakao account” in Korean.

Step 4: Log in to create your account

Finally, all that’s left to do is enter your KakaoTalk details to create your Melon account! If you’re already signed into KakaoTalk on the device you’re using for Melon, you’ll be logged in automatically without the need to enter your details.
