The director revealed that the song was gifted to the drama by IU herself.

To use the song, we needed to clear the rights, so we contacted IU. IU then told us because she wrote, produced, and sang the song, she could give us full clearance and told us, ‘you can just use it for free.’ We were so thankful.

The director had worked with the singer/actress on their drama Dream High.

IU has previously stated her love for the song “Knees.” The song has become one of the singer’s most well-known songs, and in a past concert, the singer is to have said, “If ever I die naturally of old age, I would like to be known for three songs: “Knees,” “Heart,” and “Through The Night.”
