Korean netizens are showing a mixed response to news that Korea’s President-elect Yoon Seok Yeol will appear on You Quiz On The Block. Some fans accuse the show of showing partisanship toward the incoming President and his party. Fans wrote, “If Yoon Seok Yeol is on, I am no longer watching this political show,” “He (Yoon Seok Yeol) first tries to use BTS, and now he’s using Yoo Jae Suk,” and, “I am so disappointed, I won’t be watching the show moving forward.”

Other fans defended the show, writing, “It is tradition that newly elected Presidents appear on many variety shows,” “This can be a moment where the nation can come closer together,” and, “It makes sense for the President to come on television to rally the nation.”

Unlike the United States, celebrities and variety programs are expected to show neutrality when it comes to politics. Celebrities, in particular, are not able to speak their minds freely when it comes to politics due to fear of backlash.

Conservative Yoon Seok Yeol was voted as Korea’s twelfth President defeating Lee Jae Myung on March 10, 2022.
