Each month, Gaon gives out certifications to albums that have reached certain sales achievements on their music charts. The first type of certification, a platinum certification, is awarded when an album reaches 250,000 sales. A double platinum is awarded at 500,000 sales, a triple platinum at 750,000 sales, and a million certification is given at 1,000,000 album sales.
For the month of February, announced on February 11, 8 K-Pop albums have earned new certifications, which is a pretty big number! Among them is a rookie artist’s album, as well as a new soloist’s debut album.
First up is Kim Hojoong, who actually has not just one, but two albums that have been awarded certifications this month. The trot singer’s albums The Classic Album I – My Favorite Arias and The Classic Album II – My Favorite Songs have both sold over 250,000 copies each, which earned them both a platinum certification. They were released on December 17, 2020 and December 18, 2020 respectively, so it’s really impressive that they could sell so many units just since then.
IZ*ONE‘s latest album, One-reeler / Act IV, has also been newly certified this month. Released on December 7, 2020, this album has sold around 450,000 units, which means that it has also earned a platinum certification and is well on its way to earning a double platinum! They have already achieved this once with Oneiric Diary back in August of last year.
Next up is Border: Day One by the extremely popular and successful rookie group, ENHYPEN! Like the albums above, it too earned a platinum certification for the month of February, with currently over 375,000 sales total. This is an incredible start to this group’s career, and it’ll be interesting to see where they go from here.
The first soloist on the list this month is Kai with his self-titled debut mini-album. It, too, earns a platinum certification for its near 350,000 sales, after it was released on November 30, 2020. This is definitely a huge success for a solo artist, and it’s good to see Kai thrive!
Despite their departure from JYP Entertainment — or perhaps maybe even because of it — GOT7‘s latest album, Breath of Love: Last Piece was also awarded a platinum certification by Gaon. Like Kai’s album, it has nearly reached 350,000 unit sales as well since it came out on November 30, 2020, so it could certainly still reach double platinum eventually.
The only album this month to earn a million certification is NCT‘s Resonance Pt. 2! Since it came out on November 23, 2020, the album has sold around 1.24 million units. Resonance Pt. 1 was previously awarded this certification as well, since it has made over 1.47 million sales.
And finally, the last album to be given a new certification is actually SHINee member Jonghyun‘s Poet | Artist. Though the platinum certification is being given posthumously, it’s great to see that fans are still keeping his memory alive by listening to his incredible music and that he’s being recognized for his achievements.
Congratulations to everyone that earned new Gaon certifications this month!
