While he has not officially made his debut yet, you may already know Beomhan as he did a tour around the United States last year with soloist Jay Chang. They frequented K-Pop festivals and events, working as baristas and waiters, as well as performing as part of their Kpop Rookie Trainee Show.

Lately, they have been back in Korea and recently released a song together titled “THE AWAKENING.”

Beomhan especially lives on our TikTok FYPs. He regularly hosts live broadcasts on social media, including the video-sharing app and Twitch. Both Jay and he have their own TikTok accounts, too, often participating in trends.

Beomhan has become famous for his charisma and joyful personality, especially through social media. Still, he has not gone without criticism.

Some K-Pop fans criticize Beomhan as it appears he is more active on social media than actually training and pursuing his K-Pop career.

Such comments became more frquent last week after one of his live broadcasts. He gained backlash after making controversial statements regarding dating in the K-Pop industry.

A lot of like trainees and idols… they do [date] anyway, which I honestly think is kind of messed up, and it’s really unfair to the fans, in my opinion…

— Beomhan

Beomhan stated that he felt that idols should refrain from dating. This belief reiterated the toxic fandom culture that if an idol dates, they are “cheating” or “betraying” fans.

I don’t think idols should be dating because it’s like … even though it’s not like an actual relationship, you have a connection with the fans, and it’s literally like you’re kind of betraying that and going behind their back. Imagine you pay like $200 to go to … an idol’s concert, and that idol pays like $200 buying gifts for like their girlfriend. Don’t you think that’s so messed up? Isn’t that so crazy?

Despite the negative backlash and criticism Beomhan has faced recently, more fans have defended him. They explain that his live broadcasts have good intentions, he works very hard, and he often says and does things due to his ADHD.

Now, Beomhan himself has addressed the criticism in an Instagram Live.

Whatever I believe for myself, I kind of like said about other people in like a way that was just not nice. I was like, ‘Oh, it’s messed up for them to do this.’

Beomhan personally apologized for his controversial statements regarding trainees and idols dating. He promised to be more careful with how he words things in the future.

But it’s like, who am I really to say anything about their lives? Right? So, I apologize, and I’m very sorry… I can see where… like there is a learning point for me and, in the future, I will be more careful with how I word things.

He also explained that his opinion at the time was probably based on the training he had received in the K-Pop industry. As a result, he projected and realized it was wrong.

And also it was just a bad opinion like you learn certain things when you enter this industry, and you’re told certain things, and I kind of let that project onto other people. So, I apologize for that, and I’m sorry for how I worded it. I’m sorry for my L take.

Beomhan continued the live broadcast to address further the additional hate and criticism he had received recently. Over the past week, he has been attacked for about everything from his hyper personality to his appearance.

But yeah, there are certain things that I wanted to talk about beyond that as well where like first of all, because of that, we’ve been getting a lot of hate. …I think, honestly… It’s fine. Because whatever mean things you have to say about me… like because of this, people were making fun of the way I looked, people were making fun of my family, people were making fun of my fans.

Throughout the live broadcast, Beomhan attempted to laugh about the hate he had seen directed toward him. He claimed it was fine because he had already said all the same things to himself before, so it didn’t affect him so much. This included saying some concerning things about hating himself.

And it’s fine, whatever you said about me, I’ve probably already said to myself. If you hate me, and before this incident, you thought you were alone, you’re not because I also hate myself, and I think that’s a common thing here that everyone knows. If you hate me, it’s okay. Whatever mean things you have to say about me, my looks or like whatever, I know and I’ve said it to myself.

Nevertheless, he called out people for sending hate to his fans. He wishes that people would stop at him and leave his fans alone.

However, where I kind of like draw that line or where I thought I drew that line was when you started coming at my fans and started making fun of my fans for whether or not they had like tattoos of us or like, ‘You’re a Beomhan stan?’

Additionally, Beomhan responded to the accusations that he doesn’t train and only does live broadcasts.

And they’re like ‘Yo, when does this guy even train? I’ve never seen this guy even dance.’ I don’t sleep.

— Beomhan

He explained his sleeping schedule and how it allows him to do both training and social media. However, it results in only a couple of hours of sleep.

I don’t sleep. I wake up at 9? 8 or 9, to get ready for these lives, AM. I post at 7. And until I post at 7 AM, I’m training, practicing, working out, or anything. So, 3 to 4 days a week, I’m sleeping for less than 2 hours? At most.

Beomhan claimed that it’s all by his own choosing, though. He wants to do the live broadcasts for fans.

Just so I can be here and do these lives for you guys. And that’s not a complaint; it’s by choice. I choose to do this because I love you guys.

While social media has been a great platform that has helped Beomhan and Jay grow their fandoms, unfortunately, as popularity grows, haters come with it too. So, he expressed his frustrations over how so many clips of his live broadcasts circulate, getting taken out of context.

But it’s kind of like… these platforms taking things out of context, and you guys really don’t know anything … and neither do I, which is why I said what I said was wrong. But you have no idea.

Earlier this year, Beomhan suffered a homophobic and racist assault while in New York City. Similarly, when talking about it, he attempted to laugh it off, causing more concerns among fans.
