MONSTA X’s I.M Reveals The Real Reason Why His Accent Changed And Now Sounds British

His reason is relatable AF!

While everyone in MONSTA X‘s English is so good, I.M especially is known for being fluent.

Though he was born in Gwangju, South Korea, he spent a large portion of his upbringing abroad. He lived three years in Boston and four in Israel.

MONSTA X’s I.M

If you’ve been a MONBEBE (fan of MONSTA X) for a while now, you may have noticed that I.M’s accent has changed over time. Even though he’s never lived in the UK, he sounds British when he speaks English.

MONBEBEs aren’t the only ones who have noticed the change either. During MONSTA X’s new interview with host Zach Sang on the Zach Sang Show, he couldn’t help but admire I.M’s voice. This then sparked conversation on what exactly I.M’s accent is as he knows himself that it’s definitely changed.

Zach Sang: By the way, your accent is impeccable.

I.M: Oh … My English accents are changing. I don’t know why, but…

Kihyun added that he believes I.M’s accent is technically a “British accent.” This was when Zach Sang shocked the entire group by mistakingly saying that I.M is from either Australia or New Zealand, two places I.M has never lived.

Kihyun: They changed… Like British?

Zach Sang: Well, it’s definitely less… You’re from Australia, aren’t you? Or New Zealand?

Kihyun corrected Zach, reminding him that I.M is from Massachusetts. Realizing that I.M is technically from not just the United States, but a state known for its own unique accent, Zach was stunned.

Kihyun: Boston (Massachusetts)!

Zach Sang: Oh my gosh! That’s so weird. What is your accent now?

When asked what his accent is, I.M confessed he doesn’t really know. He believes that his accent just changed the more he watched Netflix.

I.M: I think I watched too much Netflix.

Kihyun: That is the fact!

Remembering now that I.M is from Boston, Massachusetts, Zach wanted to find out if I.M still had the old accent with him. So, he asked I.M to speak like a true “Masshole,” a term referring to a Massachusetts native.

Zach Sang: You’re from Massachusetts … I remember your whole story now. It’s all coming back to me. …Give your most pure Massachusetts “Masshole” accent.

I.M: No, I don’t have it!

Unfortunately, I.M couldn’t grant Zach’s wish. It’s been too long since he’s been in Boston, and with the only English speaking he hears now mainly from international entertainment via Netflix, it’s vanished and is simply a memory.

Zach Sang: Is it totally gone?

I.M: Totally gone.

Zach Sang: Wow. Do you want it to be gone?

I.M: No.

Zach Sang: You want it to still exist within you?

I.M: I mean, I didn’t mean anything like I just watched Netflix. That’s it.

Kihyun: Too much!

I.M revealed that it has been over ten years since he’s lived in Boston, so, understandably, his accent would have changed. Now, we just wonder what exactly he’s watching on Netflix that has influenced his accent change so much!
