On March 14, the news outlet 10Asia released a seething article stating that The Glory‘s kiss scene was a blemish on the otherwise “glorious” drama.

Netflix’s series The Glory is unable to achieve its dream of a glorious drama that ends as strong as it started due to Moon Dong Eun and Joo Yeo Jeong’s kiss scene.

In the drama’s last episode, Moon Dong Eun (played by Song Hye Kyo), after achieving her revenge on her assaulters, goes to the beach with Joo Yeo Jeong (played by Lee Do Hyun), where she disappears without properly saying goodbye.

After some time, Moon Dong Eun comes back to Joo Yeo Jeong. Joo Yeo Jeong, who had suffered due to his longing for Moon Dong Eun, asks why she disappeared before asking her to help him exact his own revenge. Moon Dong Eun agrees to help, and they embrace in a kiss.

The article goes on to claim that the kiss scene broke the flow of the drama. The article also laments the kiss scene as lacking originality and claims that it seemed as if writer Kim Eun Sook had copied and pasted the scene from her earlier works.

The moment (kiss scene) broke the flow of the drama. It’s ridiculous to think (Moon Dong Eun) just shows up to Yeo Jeong, who is suffering from his lust for revenge, and then kisses him. It made it impossible to be immersed (in the drama). This kiss scene, sans the different dialogue, seems as if it was copy-pasted from writer Kim Eun Sook’s earlier romantic comedies.

Previously Kim Eun Sook had stated if it weren’t for the pushback from the production team, she would have added a kiss scene much earlier in the drama.

If it wasn’t for the director, the fourth episode would have ended with a kiss scene. It’s a cardinal rule, you see. Because (I didn’t) I think they are the coolest couple I’ve ever written into creation.

Netizens had an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the kiss scene. Many stated that the kiss scene wasn’t necessary and that the couple lacked chemistry.

  • “The dialogue wasn’t very good, and I was genuinely shocked because (Moon Dong Eun) runs away and then all of a sudden comes back and starts kissing (Joo Yeo Jeong), so I skipped it.”
  • “To be honest, the kiss scene was an outlier.”
  • “I was able to watch it because I could skip the scene. If not, I would have stopped watching it. My only escape was going to the bathroom.”
  • “The biggest issue is the chemistry… Their age difference is so great as it is, but the fact they call each other sunbae/hoobae on top of that… Besides that, their acting and everything was all great.”
  • “I agree that the love line is understandable, but its direction was the problem.”
  • “I think it is a problem with chemistry… Love itself isn’t something that is understood logically, so if the chemistry was good, I don’t think this would have been an issue. The fact that (people wanted) Ha do Young and Moon Dong Eun (to be a couple) comes up despite them being at odds with one another because their chemistry was so good.”
