South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported that the government just issued a nationwide ban on gatherings that involve drinking, singing, and other forms of entertainment.

They clarified that the move is a way to gain tighter control over people’s lives during times of economic instability.

“(Pyongyang) has devised a system whereby party organs report people’s economic hardships on a daily basis, and it has banned any gatherings related to drinking, singing and other entertainment and is strengthening control of outside information.”

The move follows sanctions put in place by the U.S. and others, and China’s decision to limit its trade and travel in and out of the North in response to the growing threat of Kim Jong Un’s nuclear tests.
