A man known as Jerry Tanaka has recently shared a video of a man at a coffee shop calling an Asian couple “gooks”, an extremely offensive term that refers to people from East and Southeast Asia.
The man repeatedly commented that the Asian woman looked like actress Sandra Oh, to which the couple took offense. When the man filming the video responded by clarifying that not all Asian people look the same, the elderly man called them “gooks”.
Once the Asian man started recording the video and told the man to say it again, the man stuck up his middle finger and quietly repeated, “Gook.”
A manager of the coffee shop later came over, when the elderly man tried to explain that he simply commented that the Asian lady resembled the actress Sandra Oh. However, when asked what he called the couple afterwards, he continued to avoid answering the question.
Once the coffee shop manager heard the story and suggested that the elderly man apologize to the Asian couple, he went ahead and said, “I apologize.”
The man recording the video had expressed his hesitance on sharing the video, but ultimately decided to share it in order to raise awareness of these situations as well as to prevent such events from happening in the future.
“I feel it necessary to make people aware that this racism exists even in liberal states like California, and also to prevent this man from doing this again to other minorities.”
