Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi Smash Subunit Records (& More) With “Monster”
Red Velvet’s first unit, Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi, debuted just a few days ago, but the duo has already broken several major records for K-Pop subunits.
For one, Monster became the highest-selling girl group subunit album of all time within just one day of release. The album sold 87,928 copes on Hanteo on its first day, putting it above past popular female units like Girls’ Generation – TTS and Orange Caramel.
This staggering sales figure also landed Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi at 5th place on the list of female K-Pop acts with the highest first day sales. The only subunit album on the list, Monster sits behind (G)I-DLE’s I Trust (91,311 copies) in 4th place, IZ*ONE’s Oneiric Diary (152,635 copies) and Bloom*Iz (183,975 copies) in 3rd and 2nd place, and TWICE’s More & More (274,472 copies) in 1st place.
On top of that, Monster now holds the most iTunes #1s for any subunit album in K-Pop (including male units). Monster already has #1s in 51 countries, and it’s still rising up many charts.
This puts Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi at 4th place on the list of female K-Pop acts with the most #1s on iTunes. They sit behind BLACKPINK in 3rd place (52 #1s for Square Up), LOONA in 2nd place (60 #1s for #), and (G)I-DLE in 1st place (61 #1s for I Trust).
The unit’s records stretch to YouTube too. “Monster” quickly became the K-Pop subunit music video with the most views in 24 hours, achieving 11,479,853 views in its first day. The 2nd highest on the list is “Lil’ Touch” by Girls’ Generation – Oh!GG, which achieved 9,020,771 views in 24 hours. “Monster” also holds the record for most-liked unit music video in the first 24 hours.
With time to go until Monster hits its first week mark, Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi is expected to achieve even more over the coming days.
