According to the legal community, the court ruled in favor of Min Hee Jin against eight malicious commenters. Four commenters must pay 300,000 KRW ($~216.18 USD), and the remaining four must pay 200,000 KRW ($~144.12 USD) to Min Hee Jin. The court also ordered Min to cover 90% of the legal costs.

Last year, malicious commenters left comments on articles about Min, who was embroiled in a management dispute with HYBE. The malicious commenters were sued for leaving comments on articles about Min stating that she never attempted to take NJZ (NewJeans) away.

During the trial, Min’s representative stated, “The malicious commenters have insulted and defamed Min online. They must pay 3,000,000 KRW per person for the psychological damages.”

The court stated, “It is reasonable that the comments could damage the social image of Min’s personal value. It is clear from experience that she suffered mental distress. Although posting comments was a one-time incident, many people were expressing negative sentiment towards her, as there was controversy surrounding her then.”

K-Netizens, while glad to see the malicious commenters getting fined, were curious as to how the fines were chosen for different comments.

  • “Good!”
  • “I’m curious as to why people even write malicious comments.”
  • “They must pay a fine, so it will go on record. You can file a civil suit and claim compensation. If you don’t like it, you can go to the second trial and buy more time.”
  • “I’m purely curious as to how they choose the payment amount for the fines? What’s the standard?”
