SM Idol’s Anti-LGBT Sentiments Resurface After Recent, Controversial Actions

The first instance was over a decade ago.

Fans are always excited to see many “pink-blooded” groups perform and interact on and off stage. The SMTOWN events bring together idols who have been in the industry for longer than some have been alive, like SUPER JUNIOR and NCT members.

Many were surprised to see Super Junior‘s Siwon interact with NCT‘s Jaemin, with the older idol grabbing Jaemin’s hand as they spoke.

While some were excited to see the interaction, others had negative feelings and cited Siwon’s past as reason for them. One viral tweet called Siwon a “homophobe,” accusing him of being “gay for pay” or showing closeness with other men for attention.

These allegations go a few years, when Siwon was extremely active on X and often shared his thoughts and feelings. The idol retweeted a tweet regarding a precedent setting case in the United States involving a woman, Kim Davis, who refused to issue a gay couple a marriage license,

The tweet, from a pastor, claimed that same-sex marriage did not exist.

Siwon apologized after the tweet with a series of his own, stating that he should not have reposted it.

In 2022, the idol was slammed again over a message sent on Bubble that many found to be transphobic, or at the very least, mocking of transgender people. Siwon sent a meme featuring a scene from the Titanic where a character used pretended something he was not to save his own life, replacing the original with the character saying that he was transgender.

These instances, and the idol’s support for Israel and U.S Presidents Ronald Raegan and Donald Trump, likely inspired such a negative reaction to his interaction with Jaemin.
