Although K-Pop can be seen through rose-tinted glasses, netizens have raised concerns about certain aspects of the industry, including the strict expectations on how an idol looks and the extreme lengths groups undertake to reach those standards.

One idol who recently had to address topics of weight during a live broadcast is Stray KidsBang Chan.

Yet, STAYs raised their anger after a disrespectful comment was left in the comments during the live broadcast that Bang Chan actually saw.

One of the comments that caught the idol’s attention made STAYs worldwide very angry. During the broadcast, Bang Chan read the comment saying, “Chan, don’t get fat.”

Netizens were shocked at the disrespectful comment towards the idol, especially in an industry where weight and body image have been a cause of concern.

Unsurprisingly, as many expected from Stray Kids’ leader, Bang Chan addressed the comment calmly. As soon as he read the comment, Bang Chan explained, “I mean, there’s nothing wrong with being fat.”

Bang Chan then went on to explain that for him, weight gain is something he does to help build muscle, especially as he explains that it can be tough to gain weight because of his metabolism.

It’s just that for me, I want to gain weight, especially when I want to build muscle. Because I have such a fast metabolism system, I have to eat a lot.

The idol then explained his eating and exercising habits, and it almost seemed like he was trying to justify his decisions after reading the comment.

I haven’t been exercising for about a week now but because of that maybe a lot of, I’ve been looking a little slim these days. If I don’t exercise, my appetite just spears and in the end, I don’t eat properly, which is fine.

Bang Chan ended by speaking about how his fast metabolism is the reason he burns fat.

That’s why having such a fast metabolism system, I feel like it burns a lot of the fat that I have. So, it makes me look really slim.

As expected, Bang Chan responded calmly to a very rude comment. When the broadcast had ended, netizens shared their anger about the comment that was sent to Bang Chan. For many, it was crossing the line and especially as the idol has opened up about his struggles with food and weight in the past.

Yet, they also praised him for his response to the comment. Rather than ignoring it, he explained that gaining weight shouldn’t be shamed.

Although live broadcasts allow closer interactions between fans and idols, many believe some netizens take advantage of that privilege. Idols are still human beings, and netizens believe that certain topics should not be brought up in situations where idols take time out of their busy schedules to communicate with fans.
