Top Actress Announces Surprise Marriage To 11 Years Older Comedian, Sparks Scathing Reactions
Japanese actress Fumi Nikaido has surprised fans by announcing her marriage to comedian Kazlaser. The announcement was made through a joint statement, catching many off guard due to the pair’s age difference and contrasting public images.

Fumi Nikaido, born in 1994, is one of Japan’s most acclaimed actresses. She rose to fame with her role in Koji Yakusho’s Toad’s Oil and gained international recognition after winning the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival alongside Shota Sometani for their performances in Shion Sono’s Himizu. She has since been named an “International Rising Star” by the New York Asian Film Festival and highlighted in Variety as an “Int’l Star You Should Know.”

Kazlaser, whose real name is Kazunori Kaneko, was born in 1984 and is best known as the boke in the comedy duo Maple Chogoukin. Recognizable for his all-red outfits and gold hair — a look inspired by the 80s anime Space Cobra — he is a familiar face in Japanese variety shows. His eccentric style and comedic persona sharply contrast Nikaido’s image as a serious actress.

The couple stated they hope to build a cheerful and relaxed household, acknowledging that their strong personalities may sometimes lead to disagreements.
“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support.
We, Kazlaser and Fumi Nikaido, would like to share the news that we have officially registered our marriage.
Both of us have strong personalities and personal preferences, so there may be times when we clash or feel down. However, we hope to build a relaxed and cheerful home where we can always end up smiling and facing forward together.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been a part of our lives up until now. Moving forward, we will approach our work with even greater sincerity and do our utmost to meet your expectations.
It would mean the world to us if you could continue to watch over us warmly.”

Despite their positive message, the announcement drew harsh remarks from some Korean netizens on TheQoo.

- “No way that comedian was born in 1984?? I honestly thought he looked like he was over 50.”
- “So that’s her type.”
- “Japanese women, can we please work together as a team for once?”
- “Why are Japanese actresses like this?”
- “You’re pretty, you’re a great actress… so why lolololol”
- “Oh my god…”
While the marriage has received congratulations from fans in Japan, reactions overseas have been more mixed.
