My Lovely Liar focuses on the relationship between composer and murder suspect Kim Do Ha (former NU’EST and Wanna One member Hwang Min Hyun) and “liar hunter” Mok Sol Hee (Kim So Hyun).

Mok Sol-Hee (Kim So-Hyun) has a special ability that allows her to distinguish whether people are lying or not. She hates her ability and views it as a curse. Because of her special ability, she is unable to trust anyone. Mok Sol-Hee gets involved with a murder suspect (Minhyun) who insists he is innocent, but nobody believes him.

Throughout the series, we slowly uncover the mystery behind the death of Kim Do Ha’s ex-girlfriend, Choi Eom Ji (Song Ji Hyun), whom he was suspected of murdering. For years, he has been in hiding as many still believed that he murdered her, although he was innocent.

After viewers have theorized for weeks on the true story behind the ex-girlfriend’s mysterious death, it finally began to unravel in Episodes 13 and 14.

J Entertainment director Cho Jae Chan (Nam Hyun Woo) surprisingly turned himself in for the alleged murder of Eom Ji, claiming that he had been in love with her and accidentally murdered her after she rejected his confession. Among the evidence was her couple ring in his possession, which matched a man’s ring that was found with her dead body. It seemed he had gotten the ring to match hers that she previously had with Do Ha.

Yet, Detective Lee Kang Min (Seo Ji Hoon) became suspicious when Jae Chan’s story changed. In a record, he had said he burned Eom Ji’s clothes, and while speaking to him, he said he threw them in the ocean. So, in Episode 14, he enlisted Sol Hee’s help, who discovered that Jae Chan was lying about everything and was going along with a plan orchestrated by his older brother Cho Deuk Chan (Yoon Ji On), the CEO of J Entertainment and best friend to Do Ha.

Sol Hee rushed to J Entertainment while both Do Ha and Deuk Chan were at an event in which Deuk Chan was announcing Do Ha as the company’s new president. She went to Deuk Chan’s office to find evidence that Jae Chan had told her about, only to discover a polaroid of Do Ha and Deuk Chan hidden at his desk. She began to remember details from her conversations with Deuk Chan, such as him untruthfully congratulating their relationship, only to realize he has had feelings for Do Ha this entire time. The other man’s ring found with the dead body was not Jae Chan’s but Deuk Chan’s, who got it made to match Do Ha’s.

Deuk Chan went into his office to discover Sol Hee holding the evidence, and she confronted him. He confessed he liked Do Ha and begged her not to tell him, only for heartbroken Do Ha to walk in on the two. Seeing his best friend, the man he loved, find out the tragic truth about him, Deuk Chan began to have a panic attack and ran out, only to be caught by the police.

Yet, Deuk Chan made a run for it, and he drove off in a car. They chased him, but he unbuckled his seatbelt and intentionally got in a horrible accident.

My Lovely Liar viewers were shocked by the turn of events, from the murder reveal of being Do Ha’s most trusted friend of fifteen years to the fact that Deuk Chan had been harboring unrequited love all this time. Many did not see any of this coming at all.

Non-BL (Boy Love) K-Dramas are increasingly inserting queer storylines, but unfortunately, many have tragic endings for gay characters. It’s certainly not the representation we would have hoped for.
