On May 28, the idol, who is currently carrying out his military obligations, flew overseas to appear in his sister’s wedding in Los Angeles. Scenes of the beautiful marriage quickly went viral.

Netizens, however, were surprised to see that Mino had long hair. It is understood that new recruitments, even those who serve as civil servants, need to go through mandatory basic training where they are required to shave their heads.

YG Entertainment quickly released a statement on May 29 to address the controversy. According to the label, the idol was excluded from undergoing basic training after being examined by the military.

Netizens had mixed reactions, while some expressed skepticism over Mino’s exclusion from mandatory training, many others came to the idol’s defense.

  • “You guys are criticizing the celebrity because you can’t do anything to the military.”
  • “This is why celebrities feel like they need to act happy even when they aren’t mentally well. Because whenever they say they aren’t well, instead of showing support, you guys express skepticism.”
  • “It’s rare for the military to assign you to civil servant duties these days. If he was assigned to it due to his mental health, I think the military didn’t want him on active duties… I hope he gets better soon.”
  • “There must be a reason… Be well.”
  • “I am pretty sure he is required to shave his head… His hairstyle doesn’t seem appropriate.”
  • “There recently was a military scandal involving celebrities, so I am pretty sure they made sure (Mino’s illness) was legitimate. But I didn’t know those in the military are allowed to travel overseas to attend a family member’s wedding.”
  • “Civil servant recruits are allowed to be excluded from basic training? I never knew this before.”
  • “Just because he has anxiety doesn’t mean he can’t ride an airplane.  In my case, my anxiety acts up only when I have severe stress or am emotionally burdened, and I can ride the airplane fine.”
  • “If there was a problem, the military would have said something.
  • “I am sure the miiltary would have done their due diligence, and I am sure authorities gave him the okay to grow his hair. What’s the issue?”

  • “You mean his (anxiety) is so bad that he can’t go through basic training?”
