Where Is He Now? The Man Who Married A Hologram In Japan
Many people adore fictional characters, but one man in Japan took his love a step further than normal. He did what most only joke about doing—he married his favorite hologram virtual singer.
In 2018, Akihiko Kondo, a 35-year-old civil servant from Tokyo, shocked thousands all over the world when news of his marriage to a hologram named Hatsune Miku spread. For Akihiko, the wedding was his way of showing his unconditional love for Hatsune, whom he found comfort in when he fell into a deep depression caused by work and fear of social rejection.
However, the marriage quickly drew mixed reactions from people. Some felt that it was harmless because he wasn’t hurting anybody, while others felt that it was an alarming form of detachment from society.
Despite the controversy, Akihiko continued his work as a civil servant and kept a low profile.
What has he been up to now that several years have passed since the wedding? Is he still married to his virtual wife? As seen on his social media platforms, the 40-year-old is still very much in love with her!
His most recent Instagram post on July 13 was a picture of his life-sized Hatsune Miku doll holding a CD.
In a separate post, he moved her to the window and said, “Big Miku in our house thinking of something as she watches the city.”
He happily shares many photographs of her in different outfits and even brings her around in public spaces.
And although most of his posts focus on her, there are also a few where he joins her for a shot…
…and has some friends over.
Several years may have passed since the two were wed, but their story continues to be shared all over the world, even in print!
However, not all is well between the two. Support for the Gatebox software that allowed his interaction with Hatsune Miku has ended, meaning he can no longer communicate with her.
In a world where technology is constantly evolving, there is no certainty in Akihiko Kondo’s marriage to a fictional character. But if the past years are any indication, then he is determined to continue loving the hologram.
