Training for K-Pop idols is famously intense. They endure hours of practice daily, adhere to strict diets, and frequently face sleep deprivation. The challenges continue post-debut, with exhaustive schedules filled with rehearsals, performances, recording sessions, photoshoots, and media appearances. These rigorous routines can take a significant toll on the idols’ physical and mental health, leading to detrimental health issues.

In the last few weeks, a worrying number of idols have been reported to be dealing with health issues.

IVE‘s Rei went on a temporary hiatus due to health concerns on April 10. Soon after, on April 26, Red Velvet‘s Joy missed several tour dates after announcing she would be going on hiatus due to health issues. Adding to the list, SHINee‘s Onew is sitting out of comeback promotions due to health issues.

In addition, aespa‘s Giselle won’t be attending the group’s U.S schedules due to poor physical condition, and BLACKPINK‘s Jennie had to leave a concert mid-performance due to feeling unwell just a few days ago. These incidents have not only alarmed fans but also triggered discussions about the industry’s work conditions.

Fans worldwide have expressed their concerns and support for these idols on various social media platforms. They have urged management companies to take the idols’ health issues seriously and prioritize their well-being over rigid schedules and performances.

The response from the K-Pop industry is crucial during these times. While some agencies have shown consideration for their artists’ health by giving them necessary breaks, others have faced criticism for their perceived inaction.

The increasing health issues among K-Pop idols underscore the high-pressure environment within the industry. As fans rally behind their beloved idols, it is evident that a balance needs to be struck between fulfilling industry expectations and preserving the health of the idols. The hope is that this recent spate of health issues serves as a wake-up call for the K-Pop industry to place their idols’ well-being above all else.
