How Did K-Pop Idols Date Before They Could Slide Into Each Other’s DMs? An OG Idol Spills The Tea

They had to get a bit more creative.

With easy access to social media and K-Pop idols having secret Instagram accounts, it’s easier than ever for them to slide into each other’s DMs to shoot their shot.

However, idols from earlier generations had to get more creative to express their romantic interest in someone. During the most recent episode of Salty Pawn Shop, an OG idol revealed their past methods.

As a former member of the first-generation K-Pop groups Roo’Ra and Diva, Chae Rina appeared alongside Brown Eyed GirlsNarsha, former 2NE1 member Sandara Park, and ITZY‘s Chaeryeong. When MC Hong Jin Kyung asked if idols used to pass each other love notes, Chae Rina confirmed it was true. She also revealed another popular method.

When idols couldn’t pass notes to the person they wanted to date, they went to someone who was in contact with both of them. Chae Rina said they often “sent words by stylists.” There was a method that was much more direct—but would never fly for the new generation.

As Chae Rina nodded in agreement, MC Yoon Jong Shin added, “Back then, male and female celebs used to go to nightclubs. People met up freely back then.

With her idol days behind her, Chae Rina has been happily married to her baseball player husband Park Yong Geun for seven years.
