Japanese professional baseball player Shohei Ohtani is used to making headlines as an elite athlete who is widely considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
At 29 years old, Shohei Ohtani has gained fans around the globe with his incredible talents.
On December 11, 2023, he shocked fans worldwide when he signed the largest contract offered in Major League Baseball (MLB) history, joining the Los Angeles Dodgers with a staggering $700 million USD 10-year contract.
Only two months after his history-making contract, he again surprised fans when he announced on his personal Instagram account that he had started a “new life” through marriage with his wife, who he shared was also from Japan in his announcement caption, which was provided in English for international fans.
The identity of his wife remained unknown in the weeks following the announcement until it was finally revealed when the talented professional baseball player traveled to Seoul for the MLB season-opening game against the San Diego Padres.
In photos showcasing the Dodgers members and their loved ones preparing to fly to Seoul, which were uploaded to the Dodgers’ official X account (formerly known as Twitter), Shohei Ohtani was pictured with his wife.
Netizens quickly identified her as former professional basketball player Mamiko Tanaka.
Mamiko Tanaka played for Waseeda University and with the professional women’s basketball team, Fujitsu Red Wave, before retiring from her basketball career in 2023, according to People magazine.
In a recent interview, Shohei Ohtani revealed that the upcoming MLB season-opening games on March 20 and 21 will be the first time his wife will accompany him.
