On May 7, actor Song Joong Ki participated in a phone interview with YTN Star about his recent hit series Vincenzo.

I made my debut at an older age, but luckily I received a lot of work opportunities and only had a short period of obscurity. I especially felt pressure to do well when given an opportunity since I started so late. Vincenzo was my first project that broke away from that pressure. Because TV series are filmed under a tight schedule, people think that it’s tough. However, Vincenzo was a project that taught me that it’s possible to work happily on set without having a hard time. As we continued to film, I felt more at ease, and I was glad that I chose Vincenzo.

Song Joong Ki also revealed that he overcame his uncertainty about comedic acting through Vincenzo. He shared that when he chooses a role, he tries to avoid a character similar to something he’s already done. He confessed, “Playing the same kind of role again feels like I’m not showing growth, so I’m not afraid to take on new challenges even if I’m criticized for it.

He further explained that Vincenzo helped fulfill this desire to act in many different genres and situations since it contained various genres. When asked if he gained any insight from portraying various genres in one project and he said no. “When I run into a wall while I’m acting, I look for the answer in the script. I don’t look anywhere else and try to find it within the script.” He explained, “Through ‘Vincenzo,’ I truly felt that this method is right for me.

After mentioning that Vincenzo was the darkest project he has ever worked on, Song Joong Ki expressed his desire to act in an even darker project. He commented that although the series had many genres, he still hopes to act in even more different genres.

He also thanked the Vincenzo actors for their amazing acting and teamwork. He explained his thanks by describing episode 17, where the Geumga Plaza tenants comfort Vincenzo after he loses his mother.

The other actors acted with sincerity even when they weren’t being filmed. I could feel their energy. I can’t forget the look in thier eyes when they acted with consideration for their co-stars.

Finally, when the interviewer asked what Song Joong Ki thought was his charm as an actor, he laughed.

Honestly, I don’t think I’m someone with amazing talent. I usually think, ‘Since I don’t have great talent, I should at least be hard-working.’ Sometimes, however, being extremely modest may not be viewed as being modest, but I do actually think that way when I act. It’s an embarrassing question, but I think my effort in being diligent is the biggest aspect.
