Here’s What Super Junior’s Eunhyuk And Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon Really Thought When They First Heard Their Group’s Names

Their reactions were very similar!

When it comes to SM Entertainment, the company has created what seems like a huge number of idols and groups since they were established in 1995. Even in 2021, they continue to be classed as one of the top three by continuously being the trendsetters and producing A-Class artists.

Two of those groups that many have attributed to the company’s longevity are Girls’ Generation and Super Junior. Since debuting, both groups have gained worldwide attention for their talent, visuals, and charisma.

After releasing her new track, Girls’ Generation member Hyoyeon recently appeared on Naver‘s D&E podcast, with Super Junior’s Eunhyuk and Donghae.

During the podcast, the trio showcased their chemistry that comes from years of working alongside each other at the same company. Although Girls’ Generation is Super Junior’s junior, Hyoyeon started training a lot earlier.

In particular, they discussed the meanings behind each of their group’s names. As the idols discussed Girls’ Generation’s longevity, Donghae suddenly remembered the first time he heard the name.

I suddenly remembered this, ‘What happened with your team name?’ And you said Girls’ Generation, and I was like, ‘What? Girls’ Generation?’ I remember that.

Eunhyuk and Hyoyeon added that, when you first hear the name, it can be quite surprising. Yet, D&E wasn’t singling out the group, and Donghae added that it seemed to be a trend during that time in K-Pop to have names that were shocking.

TVXQ, everyone got shocked. No, not that. ‘What’s your name?’ ‘Super Junior?’ ‘What?’ And we debuted, and then it was your turn.

Hyoyeon then explained that even she was shocked when they first heard the group’s name, and although it seems normal to fans now, it must be a shock for all groups when they first heard their name.

Yet, Eunhyuk had the funniest response to this and, for him, he thought that with the debut of SHINee, the names SM chose for its artists started to improve.

I think the names, starting from SHINee, they got normal. Until Super Junior and Girls’ Generation, it’s a bit… when you first hear it, you take a step back.

— Super Junior’s Eunhyuk

Hyoyeon then added that they were initially meant to be called Super Girls to tie in with the name from Super Junior. Yet, with the name Girls’ Generation, it just slips off the tongue, and fans couldn’t imagine them being called anything else.
