Her story is inspiring.

Japanese idol Fujiko is a member of Hiroshima’s Akujo Jidai, a local girl group made up of women in their forties, who are bringing joy to audiences while pursuing their dreams. Most of their adoring fans are also in their forties or fifties.

In the idol world, most active artists are unmarried and childless, especially if they are under the age of 30, but Fujiko was already a mom at 17.

I’ve lived through things, yeah. That shows when I sing or dance. There’s a depth that youth can’t copy. And honestly, that’s my biggest weapon.

— Fujiko

She married and divorced her husband two years later. For the next two decades, she focused on raising her two children as a single mother while working a variety of jobs, but things took an unexpected turn a few years ago, after she joined an onstage dance collaboration with Akujo Jidai.

After the show, they invited her to audition for the group. Fujiko ended up debuting right around when her now 27-year-old daughter was giving birth.

Now, Fujiko is the grandmother of a three-year-old. She works as an office worker by day and an idol by night—and her co-workers have no idea!

It’s still a bit of a secret. Can’t risk the eyebrows raising too high.
